1. SAVE ENERGY

  • Make sure all computers and other office equipment are turned off when they are not being used and that lights are turned off when natural light is sufficient.
  • Use energy efficient light bulbs where possible.
  • Make sure energy saving features on PCs, printers and photocopiers are enabled.
  • Don’t fill the kettle to make a single cup of coffee.
  • Practise five days work instead of five and a half days work.

2. DIGITALIZE

  • The greenest paper is no paper at all, so keep things digital and dematerialized whenever possible.
  • Keep files on computers instead of in file cabinets (this also makes it easier to make offsite backup copies or take them with you when you move to a new office).
  • Review documents onscreen rather than printing them out.
  • Send emails instead of paper letters.

3. USE GREEN MATERIALS

  • Use recycled paper and envelopes that have been processed.
  • Pens and pencils can also be made of recycled materials, and refillable pens and markers are preferable to disposable ones.
  • Use biodegradable soaps and recycled paper or cloth towels in the washroom and pantry.
  • Buy in bulk so that shipping and packaging waste are reduced, and reuse the shipping boxes.
  • Recycling printer cartridges is often free, and recycled replacements are cheaper than new ones.

4. LUNCH TIME

  • Bringing lunch to work in reusable containers is likely the greenest (and healthiest) way to eat at work.
  • Also, bring in a reusable plate, utensils, and napkins.
  • Carpooling with colleagues when go out for lunch.

5. RETURN TO SENDER

  • Ask suppliers to take unwanted packaging back for reuse.
  • Ask packaging supplier about a returnable credit system.

6. SHARE STATIONERY

  • Encourage staff to share and circulate copies of reports rather than issuing separate copies.
  • Share staplers, hole punches etc. rather than owning one each!

7. MEASURE HOW MUCH YOU USE & HOW MUCH YOU WASTE!

  • Keep track of the number of copies we make. Use the counter on machine to work out just how much paper is being used. Prepare to be surprised!
  • Calculate the weight and volume of paper used in office each year and let staff know how much they use.

8. CARPOOLING

  • Encourage employee to carpool. This will save them money in petrol and lessen Carbon Dioxide in the air.
  • Carpooling reduce the quantity of car in office and save a lot of parking lot.
  • Try not to drive as much. If we are out on the road a few errands, try to get everything done while we are already out and about.
